We thought we knew the story we're about to tell.

Truth is often stranger than fiction, as you will see.

I don't think anybody saw this coming.

I don't think that you could have imagined this in a million years.

But here at the river is where it first went wrong.

Among a group of young men and women who'd formed what felt to them like a kind of family.

It was an almost every night thing during the summertime that we would go down there and hang out with friends, meet girls.

A daily gathering of the ones who didn't quite fit anywhere else.

One of their number had just left the family nest, set out on her own.

She was a special one.

Because of a kind of no-nonsense charisma, she seemed to carry around with her.

She was happy.
