I waited.
Ten minutes went by.
Then fifteen.
Then twenty.
I got out of the truck and walked up the lane toward camp.
It was a mile or so back.
The lane cut through spruce and fir.
The trees closed in on both sides.
It was maybe 11 in the morning and the sun was out, but the light didn't make it through the canopy well.
I walked about half a mile before I heard him.
It wasn't a scream, it was a yell.
A short, loud shout cut off in the middle.
It came from up the lane from the direction of camp, maybe 400 yards ahead.
I ran.
I ran up the lane, my boots hitting the mud, my hat coming off at some point and me not stopping to grab it.
I ran and I called his name.
Travis.
Travis.
I rounded a bend in the lane and I saw him.
He was on the ground.
