But before Michelle could be led away in handcuffs, her lawyer requested she be allowed to remain free pending an appeal.

In October 2018, Michelle Carter's appeal went before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Four months later, the court upheld her conviction, saying the evidence against the defendant proved that by her wanton or reckless conduct, she caused the victim's death by suicide.

Michelle began serving her sentence in February 2019, and after just under a year behind bars, in January 2020, she was granted early release with credit earned for good behavior.

I feel worse for her mother than I do for myself.
