So those are great questions.
It functions much like the police officer on the street, which would be the referee, and then player safety is much more like the judicial system, you know, the judge who imposes the sentence.
As a referee, what you're looking for,
initially, is does the player take a poor angle, a last second?
Does he sort of jut his knee out and it's just reactionary, almost accidental?
Or does he take a line to the player
with his knee already extended.
And I think that is sort of what happened in this play here.
You know, Matthews had a lot of speed coming in on the play.
He realized he wasn't going to get a piece of him.
So he extended his knee to make sure that he got a piece of the player.
I don't believe he wanted to hurt him.
I really don't believe any player ever really wants to hurt another player.
but you want to win your hockey game.
You don't want to get scored on.
So I think that's what he's doing.
As a referee, immediately you throw your arm up.
You've got a penalty.
You talk it over with your partner.
If the player's injured, it's a pretty simple call.
