Richard Dick Cody was 79 years old.
In a social media post, his family says Cody died after a brief illness.
Cody was first elected to the state assembly in 1974 and was later elected to the state senate in 1982.
The Democrat also served as president of the state senate and twice as acting governor of New Jersey.
Cody assumed the governor's mansion temporarily three times, though.
Cody was known as an advocate for mental health awareness and treatment and as a backer of stem cell research.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says the deadly shooting of a woman in Minneapolis yesterday by an officer with U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement was an act of self-defense.
The woman was shot while in her vehicle.
NPR's Ximena Bustillo has more.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also denounced the shooting.
In a post on social media, the governor described the Trump administration as a propaganda machine, saying he had viewed video of the incident.
Walz says the state will ensure a full investigation.
