I mean, it's extreme life, but it's needed to do something extraordinary.
It's dedication of, or not dedication, discipline and a self-belief and an amazingly open attitude to wanting to look at more and more paintings.
I mean, and that group of artists, you know, Francis Bacon, Lucien, Frank Auerbach, Mike Andrews.
I think artists do need to hang out with other artists that they respect and believe in.
You know, my friendship with Tracy, we go back now nearly 40 years.
We have the same conversation about what painting is, what art is.
searching conversations you have as a student it hasn't changed we're still doing it it's a curiosity that you need to keep very alive in yourself to paint i feel yes otherwise it's too like navel gazing or something like it's good to well it just doesn't come out the paintings don't come out that exciting either if you're not really familiar
engaged in yourself and in the world that's why i like being out in the land it just i feel i like having my feet in the in the earth do you think when you paint in the city it's a different thing completely because you have painted um architectural buildings in recent times yeah yeah yeah it is different the other nice thing that just happens in wales i have undisturbed painting
Suddenly the phone's left in the house and I don't look at it for a day or two.
That is unexpected, but that's how it actually is in Wales.
