Okay, should we play our trip to the last Blockbuster store? Let's do it. Once upon a time, in a very different world, there were over 9,000 Blockbuster video stores employing over 80,000 people worldwide. That was at Blockbuster's peak in 2004, the year of Shrek 2 and Passion of the Christ. The year of the Nintendo DS and Halo 2. Those days are long behind us.

Back in New Zealand, I also have a lot of my old DVDs, but none of them from a closed-down blockbuster. New Zealand did have blockbuster stores at one point, but I never set foot in one. We had other chains around our house. Which means I was about to pop my blockbuster cherry. There it is. I can see the sign.

The world's last Blockbuster store is part of a strip mall. It would be kind of nondescript except for the giant letters spelling out Blockbuster on the roof. They're faded, but they're big. Here it is. So we've got a Papa Murphy's pizza and next to it, giant, like quite washed out Blockbuster sign. It looks aged, but here it is.

Despite never having been in a Blockbuster store, there's a sense of nostalgia going inside. I guess the brand is seed into my brain just from bits of pop culture, seeing it in movies and TV shows, and seeing the story hashed out in the last video store documentary. I have such positive memories of video stores as a kid. It's all positive.
