So the fact that he's totally out of the squad was a massive blow.

But I saw him, you know, like trying to organise his own plane because he was so devastated and he didn't want to go back on the FAA plane and all that.

And then, you know, obviously having arguments with Glenn and then throwing flowers and, you know, damaging the hotel and all that sort of thing.

But this was just a man that was...

devastated by the news that he wasn't going to be in a world cup and could you do anything in that moment i was with him i was trying to sort you know trying to sort him out and we were trying to get him there were me and paulings we were trying to get him on the plane because you know the other lads were going to go on it and we just felt it was the best thing that he got on on the fa plane and eventually like calming him down and packing his bags for him and

like horrible things when you think about it you know the fact that I'm packing Paul Gascoigne's bag to get him out of a World Cup and yeah it was just eventually we did it you know we caught him on the plane but he was a broken man then but you definitely played in an era where showing weakness or vulnerability wouldn't have been the norm right yeah

I was lucky because I didn't really have that many.

There was more highs than there were downtimes.

The two downtimes I had in football was obviously the Naeem goal in the Cup Winners' Cup final, right at the end, and then the Brazil goal.
