I don't like to use the word tricked because it doesn't really express the level of gravity that we're talking about here.

When I say trick, people think it's a game, like hopscotch or Halloween, no.

It's a system.

that they could use to control us.

They knew that they couldn't control.

It was too many of us.

Black people in the South, coming at the end of the Civil War, going into Reconstruction in Jim Crow South, black people in the South outnumbered white people five to one.
