We were poor.
We couldn't afford them.
But, you know, we'd scrounge up quarters and try to get quarters, just do crazy things.
But we were obsessed with video games.
And as I talk about the book, video games became this escape from all the things that were happening in my life.

Have you thought about what the appeal is?
I know I'm sure you have a lot of connection between the technical aspect, which you became enthralled with your whole life, but just the notion that in this little box, the rules were the same all the time.
Yes.
They were immovable.
I know the rules, and then if I'm clever enough, I can outsmart this.
It's very satisfying in a world of a lot of variables.
I totally agree with that.
When you're seven, you're not thinking that, right?
