I think we just had fun doing it, like with Tim, who wrote the songs, and Matthew, who directed it.
We just, we were just, I think we were just doing it.
We didn't really think about, I mean, it's been on for 15 years.
We never expected that at all.
We were writing it for a show for the, a Christmas show for the RSC.
And we just sort of did the thing that we wanted to do.
Like you can, I just see, when I watch it, I can see a lot of,
Roald Dahl in there but I can also see a lot of loads of Tim in there you know that his kind of crazy brain is just rippling through it and I can see myself in there and I see Matthew in there and you know so I think we sort of did it because we wanted it to look like that not because we thought that would
Do you know what I mean?
That's well, I think at the end of the book, there's this.
moment when um uh you get this sort of information dump about who miss honey is and it kind of works in the book because you're reading it in chapters and stuff like that and i knew it wouldn't work on stage though i knew that information would have to be seeded all the way along but i also felt that um i wanted matilda to tell a story like in the book she she consumes uh you know she's she consumes books and you're reading a book and that's amazing it's an amazing sort of trick you know but you couldn't i didn't want her to consume plays i wanted her to consume
So that's what I did.
So theater needs to be active.
