But try as he might, he never found a hookup.

I was trying to pick somebody up.

After last call, he said he went down to the river to watch the boats before returning to the hotel to catch some shut-eye.

As for why he lied to the police... I was embarrassed and ashamed of what I was doing the night my wife died.
