We had a first album, Major Lazer, by the way, just to give, I'm sure you read this interview many times about the genesis of this project, but Major Lazer basically was, I was working on Santi Gold at MIA Records and there's just so many records that they liked that I made, but I just made like 50 beats that were just super weird and crazy with Switch.
And I was like, let's just go to Jamaica, make a bunch of records.
We did a bunch of stuff.
The first album came out, Guns Don't Kill People, Lasers Do.
It was cool, it was like really trendsetting for like young people because it was an introduction to Dancehall.
It was like a funner version of EDM at the time, because we had like Dancehall artists and some fun stuff.
It wasn't that serious, the artwork was really fun.
Had a buzz, kind of went away, but upon the floor, this one weird record we made with Vibes Cartel became really big, because we made a funny video with Tim and Eric, who are like friends of mine from Philly, Eric Weinheim.
That record kind of took off, it became a big club record.
And we were on a small label called Downtown, also Sauncey Gold was on it.
we got upstream for that record to Interscope.
And they had another song that they pushed.
And then they were like, Jimmy Iovine's there.
I'm like doing whatever I can.
I'm like, oh, we're on a major label.
I'm wearing Beats headphones.
I'm going to Target to DJ.
I'm doing whatever the fuck he wants.
Will.i.am's like, give me high fives in the studio.
