DBR Bites #143 - Tigers Come To Town

It's time for the Duke Band to play us out and take us to Saturday.

I feel good. We're back in the win column. It wasn't a perfect game, but I think we learned a lot. We learned a lot from this last couple of weeks. I mean, good. It's good on us for getting back in the win column when the other team that we played on Saturday did not. So you always think about those sort of things. And then again, when you're looking at

the acc the next couple of weeks jason there's a lot of big games going on so it was good to learn from this win and then keep it moving because we got more basketball to play oh boy do we ever all right so we're here to recap the uh 70 to 54 victory

Nice job, Jason. So I have a couple as well. David Goldstein wrote, Tuesday's pit stop ends with a W. I thought that was good. Brian Reckless wrote in, Caleb calmly pushes Patless Duke past pit. A little bit of alliteration there. Actually a lot of Ps in there. But Jason, I'm sure we'll talk about the absence of Pat Gongba due to his wrist injury.

Boozer miscues and has turnover troubles. Sefos and Harris show heart and play well. Big Pat back for Clemson? Only time will tell. Nice job, Larry. That's a pretty good little poem there. And I have one more from Jim Baumgartner, because Jason, as you know, I like alliteration. And with the exception of the and, Jim Baumgartner uses all Cs. He goes, Caleb, Cam and company crush Capel's crew.

Well, it's funny, it wasn't great in the first half. It picked up as the game went along, and if you think about Isaiah Evans, he didn't shoot as well in the first half as he did the second. The second half is when he really came alive, and between him and Caleb Foster, they kind of took the game over and really pushed Pitt away. I think, Jason, the one thing that you can look at with regards to these stats that I think, again, we've talked about it being a little bit of a trend for various reasons, both good and bad, is the assist rate went back up.

Duke Basketball Roundup
#796 - Pouncing on the Panthers

We had 16 assists and 28 made baskets, that's 57%. We had been in the 40s the past few games. And again, most of that was due to the fact that we were pounding the paint. Against Pitt we did the same thing. We had 36 paint points, but we weren't shooting as well from outside. That of course in the second half took a turn and hitting a lot of those shots, especially those open looks, were great. I think guys were doing a great job at pump fakes.

Second passes, we had a lot of hockey assists going on in the second half with regards to the three-point shooting. A lot of it was based off of hustle drills, where you guys get hustling for a loose ball, tipping it to somebody who then made a pass to an open guy for a shot. We were able to make pit pay on those type of plays. And in the past...

So this time around we had a lot of those kind of hockey plays where one guy does the hustle, one guy grabs a loose ball, flicks it to another guy who passes it to the guy who makes the shot. So I really liked the ball movement in the second half that led to a lot of our good plays. And I just think as the game went along, despite the fact that Pitt was still hitting a lot of shots that they normally don't,

#796 - Pouncing on the Panthers

I think the other thing about Slim in this game is you saw a little bit more of the showtime come out of him. I think it was deliberate in the sense that he knew that he had been... We've talked about the fact that he hadn't been shooting well the past few games. I think you mentioned after the last game that he had been shooting in the 20s from three over the last five or six games. He had been in a little shooting slump. To break out of it, he kind of used...

his show timeness to help with the momentum he'd hit a shot he'd kind of turned and jawed somebody he he hit another shot he kind of looked at the crowd there was some guy drawing at him as he shot the shot and as the ball went in you could see him turn to that guy and kind of say something to him like hey it's gonna be a long night if you're if this is going down in the second half of course we're in we're shooting on the end by the duke bench and there's a couple times where

He paused to look at the bench to kind of hype them up. He said some stuff to our bench like, hey, we're back, baby, let's go. There was one, I think it was the final three that he hit. He turned, as he shot it, he kind of turned towards the bench because he knew it was going in. And he started to do something. And you see Tyler Thornton go...

HÀn on 6.5. HÀn on yksi AACCin isommista vankkijoista, erityisesti isommista vankkijoista. On tietenkin tapauksia, joissa hÀn pelaa ympÀri kontaktia.

but I like the fact that he has been more aggressive with it. Last night, Jason, he talked about, in the postgame, he talked about the fact that because Pat Gong was out, I'm sure we'll talk about that in a little bit, the fact that he was out meant that his rebounding was gone. He wanted to pick that up. A couple games ago when he was deathly sick and he still played, what did he do, Jason? He had a career high in rebounds that day.
