And so what happens is,
When you are going through an acute crisis, you shore up your internal reserves.
They're getting chemotherapy, et cetera.
They're seeing me in my office.
They do not shed a tear.
Once that crisis passes is when the dam breaks.
They finally finish their treatments, get a clean bill of health.
You feel psychologically safe.
And their oncologist says, great, congratulations, you're cancer free.
Your defenses come down and the dam breaks.
I've seen this over and over with my patients with cancer, for example.
Come back in six months for your checkup.
They're in my office the next day weeping.
They get the diagnosis of cancer.
They're seeing their oncologist, radiation therapist.
And they're confused because they're thinking, wait a second, I should be celebrating.
They're getting chemotherapy, et cetera.
They're seeing me in my office.
How come I feel, how come I'm crying?
I didn't shed a tear during the treatment.
