We can induce thoughts, right?
We can do that.
But we have no idea that a thought exists.
So like psychiatry is weird because every other part of medicine and science, we can measure what we are studying.
In psychiatry, we can't do that.
So along came Freud and he made a fascinating discovery, which is when a human being speaks-
We understand something about what's in their mind.
And the whole reason we get trained and the reason that we can measure mental โ we can measure your mind, right?
So we have validated scientific instruments using things like factor analysis and stuff like that where we can use the Beck Depression Inventory, which will tell you how depressed you are.
We have good ways to measure stuff.
So there's a lot of science in psychiatry.
The basic problem though is that we have a fundamental problem.
We cannot โ
We have no insight into what is in someone's mind.
We have insight into someone's mind, but we can't detect the mind.
That is a fundamental problem with science, okay?
Here's the cool thing.
We have no scientific measurement of thought, but we as human beings have measurement of thoughts.
Can I ever know what you are thinking using any instrument of science?
But you are capable of observing your thoughts, right?
