Doctors' Notes: Balance

Hei ja tervetuloa Doctor's Notesille. MinÀ olen Chris Van Tilleken. Kuten aiemmin, olen tÀÀllÀ yhdessÀ minun yksiköniÀni. MinÀ olen Doctor's Aunt. Olemme yksiköiden ylÀpuolella. Olemme juuri loppuneet kuvaamaan intervjuua Maggie Stacey. Maggie on neurofysioterapeutti. HÀn on vestibular rehabilitation specialisti. Toisaalta hÀn on yksiköiden ylÀpuolella. HÀn on yksiköiden ylÀpuolella. HÀn on yksiköiden ylÀpuolella.

Doctors' Notes: Balance

In the main episode we talked about what balance is, the entire system that controls it in our body. I mean Maggie said the foundation of our health, one of the most complex systems in our body and one that we never talk about. And it's not a system that we often think of as a system in the way that we think of the neurological system, the central nervous system, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system. So in this doctor's notes we're going to be talking about the fact that you do not need to wait until you've had a fall, until you've got a balance problem to work on your balance, that it is improvable.

We'll be talking about Maggie's clinical experience, the kind of patients she sees, and we'll be talking about young people, children, and how they can work on their balance and how adults can role model working on balance. Well, that's right, Chris, and we are also going to be testing our own balance on the balancing pad. What are we waiting for? Should we open the notes? Yep, let's open the notes.

an adaptation response. Oh, I can feel my little toes really straining. I'm using all these little muscles in my feet. Oh, and if I start chatting, I'm miles off. It's hard to know. Honestly, I don't know when I'm going to fall over. It's quite nerve-wracking doing this. Yeah. So if someone's this good, I would then get them to part their feet a little bit and then do eyes closed and slow head turns. Okay, and now I've got my eyes closed. Are you going to get me to turn my head? Just slowly, from left to right. Here we go, here we go, here we go.

Okei, mutta se on tietenkin...

HeidÀn pitÀisi saada ajatus, ettÀ tÀmÀ on hyvÀ minulle ja tÀmÀ on se, miten meidÀn pitÀisi elÀÀ elÀmÀmme. Aika usein isÀni Dolly laittaa yoga-klasiota teleon ja tekee yogaa. He eivÀt tiedÀ, ettÀ lapset johtavat, mutta Rex on 2-vuotias.

Olen aina yllÀttynyt siitÀ, ettÀ sinun johtajasi on todella hyvÀ, koska hÀn sopii hÀneen mitÀ tahansa nonsensseja on tapahtunut. HÀn sopii hÀnemme vÀhÀn nonsensseja, kuin katsoa kartuuneja. Ehdottomasti. Kun olen suosittanut, ettÀ joku saa parantamisen pannan,

It can be vestibular migraine, even if they're not having headaches. I think people are going to find that incredibly useful. Should balance be more of a public health intervention? You see posters saying, have less salt, get your step count in. The government does lots of public health, but there isn't, as far as I'm aware, much public health on balance. Should we be trying to do more to get people to work on it? Should we be putting balance boards in parks and things like this?

What kind of dogs have you got? Spaniels. Chris, I love this, that the stuff that's good for your balance is good for your balance. Yes, yes. The bigger balance. Leave the phone at home and have a spaniel as a proprioceptive challenge. Pulling you off balance, presumably. Thank you so much, Maggie, for staying with us for that extra content on Doctor's Notes. I think people find it incredibly valuable. Thank you very much for having me. Thanks for coming in.

But that thing of closing your eyes and suddenly feeling nervous that I was going to fall over, it was like a little journey into the future. You just went, oh, this is good. I've got to keep an eye on this. I've got to stay good at this. And it's not hard to imagine in your late 40s you start to go, oh, I'm getting up at night more often. I'm often a bit more tired. I'm not as strong as I used to be. You know, my eyesight is definitely going. You know, you've got a number of things. You start to knock out a few more systems and balance becomes an issue.

I love the idea that people shouldn't wait to have a fall before thinking about balance. We should all be thinking about balance. I hope that everyone will be inspired to think about it. I mean, we think about strength, we think about fitness and go, well, that'll help me in everyday life. But balance is a thing that we can train and get better at, and we should be doing it through our lives. It decays as we get older. And also, if you're paying attention to your balance system, you'll understand a lot about your general health. Well, that's it for this episode. It's time to sign off the doctor's notes.
