Ancient Secrets Uncovered: From Easter Island to Mesoamerica | #44 Ed Barnhart

Und so, die Olmec hatten Jade aus der Maya als raues Material. Aber dann traten sie es zurück zu ihnen mit... religious iconography carved into it. Es gibt kulturelle Unterschiede, die wir identifizieren können, Artstypen, die anders sind. Germany has a different language and aesthetic than does France. France is a much more, you know, fashion over form sort of thing, where Germany is very much form over fashion. Those sort of subtle differences also occur in Mesoamerica.

Like the Zapotecs speak a different language than the 32 different Maya languages. And the Aztecs spoke another one. They're part of an Udo-Aztecan language group where the Maya are a different thing and the Zapotecs are closer to them. So there's a language thing that definitely separates them as cultures. There's also stylistic things and there's aesthetic things like...

Like the Maya were nerds. They loved complicated math and they made this incredible writing system. But the Aztecs never, never adopted either one of those things. Even though they could have, it was already there for centuries and proved its utility in the Maya world. The Aztecs chose not to use their writing system or their calendar systems.

The Aztec calendar system, which came in centuries, really millennia after the Maya established this very complex calendar. The Aztec one is super simple. I can almost see them saying to the Maya, look, because the Maya start dumbing down their calendars with the more Central Mexican influence they have.
