Sometimes people have blocked tubes because they were just born that way or they had infections they never even knew they had when they were younger or they had a ruptured appendix at one point and that caused scar tissue.
They could have fibroids.
Up to 80% of women have fibroids.
These are benign tumors that grow in the uterus.
They're super common.
They don't generally cause problems unless they're big enough or in a position where they're taking up real estate from where an embryo could implant.
And that's a significant cause of infertility that a lot of people go around and don't even know that they have because it's not standard of care for everyone to get a pelvic ultrasound.
You know, they go see their OB-GYN, they get maybe a physical exam, a pap smear, but sometimes they have these issues and they just don't know until they see someone like me who does the ultrasound.
When you think about sperm, 50% of infertility has a sperm quality component coming from the male side.
Men are making new sperm all the time.
I'm like looking at you while I'm saying all of this.
I'm educating you specifically.
every 74 days is how how long it takes for a new sperm cell to grow and develop and so i do think there is this misconception that men have of like invincibility because they're like well i don't have this clock and that's actually not true our habits um you know the whether we've controlled chronic medical conditions all of those can feed into our sperm quality and
Even if it's not something you can control, sometimes there's just problems with sperm production.
Sometimes there's blockages where the sperm is being produced, but it can't make its way out.
And that is a significant contributor.
And so doing an easy test, a semen analysis, costs very little.
I always joke with patients, like, this is something you might do recreationally.
We're just asking you to aim into a cup.
But we want to look at it under the microscope and make sure there's enough sperm and they can swim.
