There was such an excitement and energy about this moment.
Well, of course, Britain ultimately left the island, but it also maintained a presence there through the sovereign base areas.
And those were established as part of the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.
There were three treaties, the Treaty of Establishment, the Treaty of Guarantee, and the Treaty of Alliance.
And the UK was a party to two of those.
And the Treaty of Establishment created the base area, the sovereign base areas, which became military outposts for the UK.
And the Treaty of Guarantee made the UK, along with Greece and Turkey, a guarantor power of the new republic's independence and integrity.
So the UK still had a role to play in Cyprus, still had territory in Cyprus after 1960.
But the island, through these treaties, was decolonized.
Well, they affected them very much.
And in particular, they were really the beginning of what came to be a series of intercommunal conflicts on the island.
So as Mr. Lysiotis was saying at the very end of his interview, Greek Cypriots didn't achieve their aim, which had been to unite the island with Greece, Annosis.
And that aim had always been opposed by the Turkish Cypriot community.
In the beginning of the anti-colonial rebellion, the Turkish Cypriot community began to respond in ad hoc ways by gangs forming to protect villages and so on.
But ultimately, it resulted in the formation of another guerrilla organization, TMT, the Turkish Defense Organization.
And
That defense organization was also organized ultimately via the Turkish military.
And so it brought Turkey more directly into the problems of the island.
Also, the Turkish community was aiming to prevent Enosis.
And so they formulated another aim, which was partition or Taksim.
