They're amazing. So there's about 20,000, 25,000 of these things or fragments thereof have been found around Japan over the last 150 years. They take all different forms and they're based on the human form. But they don't look like real people. And so they're an abstracted version of the human form, I guess. Some of them have got really elaborate hairdos.

I'm intrigued about with these Dogu figures these days, which is in Japan for Girls' Day, which happens on the 3rd of March. All girls will put out what they call their Hinamatsuri or their Girls' Day dolls. And they represent all the different levels of Japanese society. Weil in diesen Tagen sagen viele, Dogu, sie sehen wirklich süß aus. Und die ganze Süßheit ist wirklich groß in dem kontemporären Japan. Wir dachten uns, dass sie nicht unbedingt so süß aussehen.

Und sie waren direkt durch ihre Körper und hinter ihnen. Und wir dachten uns, dass sie nicht unbedingt so süß aussehen. Und die Mädchen kamen zurück und sagten uns, dass wir diese Hina-Dolls jedes Jahr rausnehmen müssen.

So I think actually maybe we should understand the Dogu figures in a similar kind of way. And in fact, there's some earlier archaeologists have commented on this and said, you know, we tend to think these things are all nice and jolly and lovely modern artwork.
