I thought he wanted to talk to me. Yeah, we're stuck and they needed something different. So I grab it, I put it on my ear and say, Juanito, what's going on, buddy? That's right. How are you doing today? You got my numbers for today? That's right.

Everybody froze on the set and I came to the rescue.

Bobby, are you intrigued? Oh, see, see, I'm very intrigued because I always thought that JaVale McGee was my favorite player in the NBA until I met him here in South Beach. I didn't recognize me. Now I think that he's a mother----.

I carried the show for eight years in the middle of ESPN's lineup, just by saying C. And whenever I said no, a couple of times in about 10 years, everything came to a stop.

Everyone got confused, the producers and everybody, right? Yes.

I felt that there was a large follow on the show. There were Spanish-speaking people, you know. They were attracted, I guess, to my figure as an old man, maybe a grandfather. I used to get letters expressing their liking of the show because of me, my accent, the way I talk, my mannerism. So it was very rewarding in that way. I changed my tone of voice on the show.

I always enjoy doing this show because I had an opportunity to work with Dan.

And that's a father's dream to be able to work with the son on a national TV show. And I like it because people, they got to know Dan. Know the guy that is writing columns or that he's talking on the radio that sounds stuck up. Not the asshole. Not the guy who's an asshole. He wanted to show them a different side of Dan. That's right. Because Dan is a nice guy.

And people sometimes, most of the time, they used to get the wrong impression of Dan. But when Dan began working with me on the TV show, then they got to know the real Dan.

Time to throw away all journalistic credibility and get reckless. Here is something we like to call reckless speculation.

I like coming here because it's actually a pretty laid back environment where you have a lot of the scouts and coaches and general managers kind of just hanging out in their workout gear, watching practice with nothing to do all afternoon. So this is actually a busy few days for me to just catch up with everyone, kind of.

discuss what their plans are here for the offseason. We've got obviously free agency coming up here. They've got the combine in a few weeks. So it's actually a convention of the losers, right? Because none of the teams that are actually playing this weekend, their people aren't here. It's like there's no one from the Chiefs here. There's no one from the Eagles.

This is all those that are now the ones that have moved on and are already looking forward to next season. So while I think

Yeah, before I came back to my room here to join you guys, I was having breakfast with a couple of scouts and they were like, so do you bring a notebook to practice and just keep track of what players are doing? I'm like, what?

And really, as much as this is about the theme here and the feel here is it's about these upcoming players, no one's really focused on that. Everyone is talking about what's coming up next, and obviously everyone's talking about the Eagles and the Chiefs still.

I hope we look back on this and it's not an Adam Gase moment. We look back on it and go, all right, he didn't nail that. But man, can that guy coach because he's had quite the dramatic few days, you know, going. I don't know how much you guys know about how this all came together. I can do it real quick for you in about 40 seconds.

But Tampa Bay Bucks wanted to bring him back as an offensive coordinator, made him the highest paid guy. Jacksonville wants to interview him for the head coaching job. They say, go. Go do it. It's a good experience. You're a young coach. Sit down with an owner. See what that's like. He comes back. He said, I think they really like me. They're like, oh, they can't like you too much.

You need to stay here. You're our OC. You're going to stay here, right? Here's a new deal. We'll give you even more money to stay here. So he's in a win-win situation. He's getting paid a bunch of money to stay as the Tampa Bay Bucs offensive coordinator coaching Baker Mayfield. And then... Part of that verbal agreement was you can't interview anymore. Like it's done, you're here.

He goes quiet, goes dark on them. And he takes a flight to Jacksonville and meets with Shad Khan all day long. And then there they decide that you're gonna be the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jacks. We're gonna pay you Ben Johnson type money, a little less than that actually. Five years, 10 million bucks. And you're gonna have control. You have full control.

It's got to be 40 times now, you know, just from being in sports. And, you know, when he joined ESPN, I'd see him in the green room. And we have some great conversations about life and parents, parenting and family. And, you know, he gives me advice when I don't even ask it. So he goes on his show and he's like, there's this woman, Diana Ruccini. She's reporting that blah, blah, blah, blah.

And I'm thinking to myself, the guy knows who I am. He talks to me all the time. But it wasn't so much that he botched my name. It was that he had no idea who that person was that was reporting. And I realized in that moment, I don't think Chris knew what I was doing at ESPN. I think he thought I did makeup. So, Shaka Khan.

Yeah, people are pretty gossipy right now. But now that the coaching cycle is wrapping up here, we're just waiting for the Saints to make their hire. The buzz today has really just been Jerry Jones and just the way that press conference went down. I mean, it should be studied because there were so many moments of just awkwardness. There were moments where he was emotional.

The whole thing was really weird. And I kept thinking if... I was Brian Schottenheimer. Does this owner want me here? Because there was some tone in there where it could be condescending at times. I didn't really get this rah-rah speech from Jerry that made me go, okay, I get it. I get why he went in-house, why he went with the offensive coordinator of the head coach that he fired.

Because to me, I don't care what they're trying to sell in Dallas. They did not have a plan. They did not think that this was going to fall apart with Mike McCarthy and that the two sides would go in different directions and that they would be on the market for a head coach. They were not prepared.

Here's something I've learned over the last few weeks about how organizations see themselves. They do not see themselves the way we can see them and criticize. They think everybody wants to be associated with them, including the Jets do. Everyone has this lack of self-awareness because they know there's only 32 of these. They know guys are willing to do whatever it takes.

Look at Liam Cohen's situation. And by the way, I don't even know where I fall in terms of whether or not I think the way he handled his business was professional or not. This is a cutthroat industry, and you only get a few opportunities. Guys, we were talking. Bobby Slowik was getting head coach opening opportunities, and he was fired from the Houston Texans last week.

Lou Anarumo was the sweetheart of the league after the Bengals went to the Super Bowl, and now he's the Colts defensive coordinator, barely. And I say barely because he had a couple options, but... I just think that owners know how hard it is for these coaches to get these jobs, that they simply look at it that way of, you're not good. Mike McCarthy, you're not walking.

I'm gonna offer you a situation, a deal that's maybe not great, but you have no other options. And I think Mike McCarthy looked at the situation was like,

nah i don't want to deal with this anymore i don't i don't want it's not it's not worth it to me at this point and so now you know he's up for the new orleans saints uh head coaching job he have obviously had some flirting there with the chicago bears so there's a market for mike mccarthy um and i think jerry jones always will believe that there's a market for the dallas cowboys uh the philadelphia eagles are in the super bowl and we want answers to just one question how obnoxious has your husband been since

He's been great, actually. It hasn't been too much. We have a little issue just in our marriage where Kevin can't ever just do anything in silence. He always has a podcast playing. And so I definitely have heard way more Philadelphia podcasts. He's the type, after they win, he wants to listen to more and more. It's not like when they lose...

He like he doesn't want to watch anything, doesn't want to listen to anything. The more they win.

Yes, he does. He does. He so he gets up around four. So he usually listens. We drop our show on Tuesday morning and Friday morning. So he listens to that first. But then he'll rip through Rosillo's or through Birds with Friends. I don't even. I don't even know what they're called. I just know that it's all Eagles talk. But yeah, no, he's been good.

I've asked him that question, actually, because I always I look at podcasting as as it's an honor that people take time knowing how busy everybody is and to put that in the schedule. And he has no reason to. He doesn't. I don't make him listen to it.

In fact, 90% of the stuff I say on Scoop City every day, I tell him anyways over dinner or, you know, just in casual conversation when we're talking about, you know, stuff I'm reporting. So it's not like it's new intel. I don't know. He must like it. He listens to it.

Yeah, I think there's moments where he wants me to go harder because he knows how much I know about stuff and I have to hold back because you guys understand the relationships and journalism and trying to protect the people that are giving me this information. So that's really the only stuff he picks on me for. He does get a little sensitive when I criticize some of Jalen's passing game.

Like, he thinks I go a little too hard. But this last show, I apologized to Nick Sirianni. I looked dead into the camera, picked the mic up right to my mouth, and I said, Nick Sirianni, I thought you stunk as a coach at the start of the season. You were stinky. I thought you were getting fired. I thought you lacked emotional intelligence. I thought he lacked horrible game management.

He kind of just seemed like a kid that had the head coaching job and Howie Rosen was smart enough to give him a bunch of adults around him like Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore. But somehow Nick Sirianni has figured out to stay out of the way. So I owe him a really big apology.

Yeah, Lane's number one at his job for sure. Saquon Barkley is number one. A.J. Brown is number one. I'd say Jalen's three. I think when what we just the version of Jalen we just saw that to me, if he can just do continue to do that. And we saw him do this on the big stage the last time they went to the Super Bowl. If you guys remember, he was fantastic the last time they went.

I had some concerns, though, about his ability to really find those receivers. We saw it. A.J. Brown's reading a book on the sideline because of how frustrated he was in the passing game. So I just think the fact that he was let loose a little bit, and I think Nick Sirianni or Kellen Moore was able to come up with a game plan to sort of take that pressure off Jalen and let him just—

let loose a little, which is really my bigger concern for them playing the Chiefs. Because I think if any team plays loose in these moments, in the bigger moments, it's the Kansas City Chiefs. I feel like they lean into it. So that's really my concern headed into the Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Yeah, I was shaking my head going like this when you were asking that question. I know. Same thing as Chris, not Greg. I know my child. Hey, what's up, Greg? I know my childhood numbers for a house that no one lives at anymore. And then I know my husband's, my mom and my dad's. And that would be it for me. So anybody else like if I don't have my phone, I'm effed.

I realized I was washed maybe like, I mean, I've known that I'm washed, but I realized like a couple of months ago, my phone started ringing and I was like, who the is calling me this late? It was like seven forty five. So I don't I don't I don't like when people call me. And then it also annoys me when people text me. So in general, I'm learning I just don't like communication with people at all.

I think probably the outside interests, like me and Andrea Carter and Chanae Agumake were on Good Morning America yesterday. And like real GMA, not like GMA3 or GMA Weekend, like proper one, like sitting across from Robin Roberts. So I would say that, like people wanting to have us at events or wanting me to host events purely because of my connection to women's basketball.

I think you know, you guys have all been in the industry a long time. You always had to come into whatever respective network it was. It was promising that you knew NFL, that you knew maybe NBA, like you had to cover the men's sports. And then women's sports were always an add on. Right. It was like, OK. And then in addition to your main stuff, you'll also do you'll dabble in women's sports.

And now we're starting to see, I think, networks, ESPN and other ones as well that are staffing specifically for women that are. giving it to people as their full time jobs as opposed to an add on or a side hustle that they do. So in terms of what I do, I think it's just not just the interest, but the resources behind it.

You know, like the women's even when I took on this space four years ago, it was sort of a breeding ground for like new people. You know, it's like you come and like you learn your chops and you go through your You're whatever on the women's side. And now we're getting, you know, the best of everyone, the best graphics people, the best researchers, the best producers.

So I just think it's it's how much more interest, but also just how much more resources are put behind it.

I love when politicians try to cosplay as irrational, angry fans. How many West Virginia games we think that dude's watched this year? Where's West Virginia in terms of public school rankings? Because I think they're like 35th in the United States. Where's your outrage for that?

Where's your outrage for literally anything else that's happening in the country right now, but this is your sticking point? You're pissed about this? Here's what I would say. If you want to leave no doubt, that is completely in your hands to leave absolutely no doubt.

You either build that resume throughout the year or you win your respective conference tournament and then you don't have to worry about the corrupt committee. I don't agree with a lot of their opinions. I know that a lot of this is because I believe the AD for UNC is the committee chair. And this happens across.

All of sports is that if there's a selection committee, they typically come from a school. They're supposed to excuse themselves when it comes to these conversations. But the truth is, like anybody in this space, Dan called this a little bit ago. We had Tom Crean on our show just the other day before the UNC Duke game. And he basically said, like, if UNC.

fights a little bit and tries hard, if all things are equal, they're always gonna go with a blue blood. And that's because of ratings, right? Like they're always gonna go with a blue blood team like a UNC with the hopes that they'll face a Duke and that would be a ratings bonanza. Do I think that UNC was deserving based on their resume? Not really. I think they're one in 12 and quad one wins.

Nobody even knows what that actually means. But like... Whenever politicians do this, it's so annoying to me because you don't care. You don't actually care. You're just trying to rally up your base, curry a little bit of favor, but you don't care. And there are certainly more important things in the state of West Virginia that need to be addressed.

Yes. Yeah. When we saw this bracket, I was like, ooh. We talked to the committee after we got the bracket. We get the bracket right before the show airs because we do have to build graphics and things like that. Spoiler alert to the folks at home, we don't learn in real time. So we get a chance to just debrief with them before the show.

And they claim that they don't look at those kinds of things, potential rematches from a year ago. They don't look at, you know, what would be, we feel, and as TV people robbing people of a potential Final Four matchup between two of the faces in the league in UConn and USC.

But yeah, she's looking at her bracket and she's going, we earned a one seed and you make us have the toughest path because to get to the Final Four, we potentially have to go through UConn, a team that, by the way, ended their season last year when they were a one seed in the Elite Eight and a team that they already had to face this year.

And the thing about Juju Watkins is she is incredible and otherworldly. She's also one of those players that the more you play her, the more you sort of figure out a way to defend her. And so if I'm Lindsey, I'm absolutely upset. I know Dawn Staley was upset as well. She felt like they earned the right to be the number one overall seed.

The thing that kills me with the committee is that sometimes it feels like they judge people by some criteria and then they don't judge them by the other. For example, Texas.

We talked to them specifically about Texas, who got absolutely boat raced in the SEC championship, who barely beat LSU in the semifinals, an LSU team that didn't have Anissa Morrow or Flagey Johnson, which is like 45 points for them. And they didn't end the season particularly strong.

She brought up UConn beating the brakes off of South Carolina as the reason that they didn't jump to that number one overall seed. But nobody finished the season out stronger than South Carolina. Notre Dame finished the season out incredibly poor, and they were punished by being on the three line, but they sort of just ignored Texas. So...

The criteria doesn't really tend to make a lot of sense to me, but I think that, yeah, Lindsay's upset because she sees what awaits her, and that's trying to get through another one of the best guards in the country to get to the Elite Eight.

I hear you, Chris. There we go. I had to get you back. I'm sorry. I hear you, Greg. I think, you know, they put these microphones in the face of these coaches very quickly. I also think that she's trying to send a message to the committee. She did say a few times in that clip, like, I don't know how my team feels. I'm sure they just feel excited. We're hosting games.

We got a big game, a big game coming up with UNC Greensboro to start the tournament. But I think she's just sort of expressing her frustration for feeling like and here's my thing.

we are still at a place like the numbers are growing and we know that the games never had more attention but we are still at a place where the committee should be keeping in mind potential matchups and what that means for ratings and i think like it would have been nothing you guys to swap texas and usc nobody would have thought twice about it because yes while ucla ended up getting the best of them in the big ten tournament usc had beat them twice previously

And so it would have made total sense to swap those two. And then not only do you not have to deal with a USC-UConn matchup in the Elite Eight, but you also avoid, if everything goes chalk, you also avoid potentially having a Final Four matchup.

with two Big Ten rivals that will be facing each other for the fourth frickin' time, and two SEC rivals that will be facing each other for the fourth time. And as Rebecca Lobo said, that's not beautiful basketball.

When you face a team four times in one year, it just doesn't typically lead to a great competition that's high-scoring, this beautiful basketball that we hope to see that helps expand and grow the game. I feel like the committee could have taken that into consideration. We said the same thing last year when we saw Iowa LSU would be in a lead eight matchup and not a potential final four matchup.

It worked out in the end, and we got UConn and Iowa. We got two of the biggest faces in the game playing each other. The ratings reflected it, as did the finals. But it just would have been nothing to swap those two, and I agree with her. I don't know.

Yeah. Yeah. Like there's there. Yeah. You build a little bit of that. And maybe you could say on one side that the committee says, well, we need these elite eight games to also have high ratings. Right. If you look at the bigger picture. So that is going to be a ratings bonanza, USC and UConn. But yeah, that's my point is that. I don't really know.

I'm with Lindsey Gottlieb and that like I would just love to just sit down and figure out what exactly they have to follow an S curve. There's things like that. There's a whole lot of other things that they have to do. They can't have conference opponents meet each other too early.

I get that they're dealing with a lot of metrics and it's not an exact science, but it just feels like it would be very easy to manipulate these just a little bit to the point where like no one would know. It could be their secret. They could keep it to themselves, but ultimately we get the matchups that we deserve.

Disgusting. I don't want your I don't want your dirty dog around food. Yeah. Why? Gross. And I know you're going to cook most of it, but like, no, especially the ones that like put them in a carrier. So they have even closer proximity to the produce. Why do you need emotional support in the grocery store?

I don't play fantasy football, but I have one million friends, and my husband's friends always try to talk to me about fantasy football. Here's what I'll say. The douchey ones are the ones that pretend like they just want to have a chat with you, but really they're trying to get intel for fantasy or for betting.

Tonight, there's a mystery brewing in South Florida. I can't believe that. Who is that guy? It's supposed to be a statue of the man asking that question. Miami Heat legend Dwayne Wade. But the internet is not quite so sure. That is not D. Wade. That's Shannon Sharp, The Rock. Like, who is that? Outside the Heat home arena Sunday, the team unveiled this new tribute to the man known as D. Wade.

While there's plenty of debate about whose face that is, when you look at the whole statue, it's hard to see anybody else. A figure in a Heat jersey on top of the scorer's table? Some will tell you that's gotta be Dwayne Wade. With eight, Wade picking this iconic moment from his game-winning steal and shot against the Chicago Bulls in 2009. Wade puts it up for the win! Yeah!
