In a live broadcast on Sunday evening, the president of Benin, Patrice Talon, told his nation of more than 14 million people that the political situation on the ground is now, quote, totally under control following an attempted coup.
A group of armed soldiers identifying itself as the Military Committee for Refoundation hours earlier went on national television criticizing the 67-year-old Talon, who has been in power since 2016,
and declared a takeover of the country.
Talon, in his public address, said simply that he would like to commend the sense of duty demonstrated by his army and its leaders who have remained loyal to the nation.
