Initially, everything was fine.
And then the phone rang and somebody said, hey, our entire department is at a standstill because we can't save PDFs and we need to save PDFs to do our job.
And I was like, that couldn't have been us.
There's no way that the change to the backend authentication for logging into Linux servers could have affected your ability on your Windows laptop to save a PDF.
That couldn't have been us.
But by the same token, nobody else would have been stupid enough to deploy a change at 3 p.m.
on a Friday.
So it probably was us.
We ended up investigating and found that we said, what do you mean?
Tell me what you do when you save a PDF.
And they said, I go file, print, PDF, printer, print.
And I was like, don't you mean file, print, save as PDF, save?
And they were like, no, file, print, PDF, printer, print.
And it turns out that at this company, there's a list of printers, most of which are physical printers in the office, and one of which is a printer called PDF printer.
And we've somehow broken that.
We checked their CMDB because they have everything in their CMDB and it wasn't in there.
And then we checked their wiki, like the team's wiki.
A lot of the people in the team had been around for ages.
Nobody knew what it was.
But the wiki had been around for ages and it wasn't in the wiki.
