United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby warned of $175 oil prices that would dramatically drive up jet fuel expenses, outlining worst-case scenarios even as the aviation industry benefits from current record travel demand.

Kirby told staff in a memo Friday the already elevated price of jet fuel is prompting the airline to cut five percentage points of capacity in the near term where routes are temporarily unprofitable.

At the same time, he said the carrier is strong enough to weather a crisis and won't defer investments or furlough workers.

The Senate on Saturday blocked an amendment that would ban transgender athletes from playing in women's sports.

It marks the rejection of one of President Trump's priorities as he pressures Congress to act on a broad voting bill.

Senators were holding a rare weekend session to debate the voting legislation, which would put in place strict new requirements for voter registration

and require photo IDs at the polls in an effort to prevent people in the country illegally from casting ballots.

The House passed the bill earlier this year, but the president has since said he wants additional priorities added to the legislation, including the sports ban for transgender athletes.
