On June 19th, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger marched his troops into Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people there were officially free.
It's a part of U.S.
history that is still not as well known as it should be.
But as of 2021, June 19th marks the newest federal holiday in the U.S., Juneteenth National Independence Day.
