He had a collection of Paddy Tunney recordings, you know, Chaminade singing and...
He may have had an Arruda collection as well.
I mean, I was aware of that music.
I was very surprised and, I have to say, complimented by Stephen's choice of the song that he said he wanted to be the last song on the show, which was a very kind of low-key, intimate song.
And he, for whatever reason...
had heard the recording, which we had reissued like sometime in the past.
And he said, I want this one to be, this one speaks to me.
And if you read the lyrics, you can sort of understand why.
Things like Candidate talking on the radio from the Cheetah's Jamboree.
He must be their latest fool, you know.
And I think it was a lovely recording.
It was a calm performance apart from anything else because it was a song that was not supposed to be shouted from the barricades.
It was always just a song about when I wrote that song, I didn't feel like I was in control of my life or my place in society because I was, you know, I was a 21-year-old guy with a wife and son and I wasn't making the rent.
And what the government said was right was certainly not what was right for us.
And then, of course, the surprise was that Paul McCartney comes up and stands next to us and then we go on and play Hello, Goodbye.
with us all you know we were all pitching in and singing you know and it was a really you know joyful thing i mean uh for a while that was what people took comfort in was having somebody go hey this is ridiculous some of this stuff is just it's so embarrassing for american friends of mine so embarrassing what they're witnessing day to day with the the sort of
level of uh gracelessness but uh you know we've seen other monsters before and we'll see other monsters in the future with a couple of years these people will all be gone and it won't and we'll be dealing with another set of nightmares you know yeah new nightmares
I think it's about abdicating your responsibilities.
It's about somebody who's not
very honest.
