We need at least 15,000 moving up to 20,000.
That's not in the government's plan.
So even if we meet, or the government meet its own social housing targets, which they haven't done for a decade, we're still going to have more people coming onto the list and more people presenting as homeless.
And at the same time, the Minister for Housing slashed funding two years ago and last year for vital homeless prevention supports, like Tenant in situ.
The Minister has introduced very controversial changes to the regulation of the rental sector, which has seen objectively a dramatic increase in eviction notices and rents.
And as a consequence, more and more people are becoming homeless.
What's also very important is when you talk to homeless service providers, what they'll also say is it's not just about the total quantum of new social affordable homes, that has to be dramatically ramped up way beyond what Seamus is talking about.
But within that, government aren't ensuring that an adequate number of one beds and four beds are being provided.
Because over the last two years, the number of people presenting as homeless each year has remained relatively stable.
But single people and families with larger numbers of children are trapped for very long periods of time in emergency accommodation, sometimes beyond three years.
So we need to move towards doubling of the government's target for social housing.
We need to have an actual plan set out questionably
quarter on quarter what is going to be done to bring the numbers down and the government hasn't.
The youth homelessness strategy expired last year.
We haven't had a replacement.
There's a promise for a child homelessness strategy that hasn't been published.
And what Seamus is essentially saying is government is going to continue as is.
What that means is homelessness will continue to increase.
Well, let Seamus speak for himself.
Let him have the last word on this.
