Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

i ate humble pie with an appetite i stopped at the humble point of my learning and says i hold hard when you offered to teach me latin i knew better people like to be above you says father keep yourself down i am very humble to the present moment master copperfield but i've got a little power

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

Okay, so he's saying that his humbleness is a strategy.

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

He can hold those debts over him.

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

So David's friend, Mr. McCauber, could potentially become Uriah's victim in some way.

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

Uriah is clearly a bad influence on Mr. Wickfield.

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

He's obviously using Mr. Wickfield's alcoholism to keep him drunk and confused and stuff so that he can take over the business himself.

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

Mr. McCauber says that Mr. Wickfield is obsolete, right?

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

That's the word he uses.

Storytime for Grownups
David Copperfield: Chapter 40

So Uriah has obviously taken over the whole firm and Mr. Wickfield has been kind of pushed to
