What I worry about critics sometimes is how they could put people off.

I'm reading a review of a film or a play or something in the newspaper and I think...

That's not how I saw it.

I hope people reading that don't think it's automatically for them.

I mean, they're entitled to their opinion and some critics are quite funny in their writing.

But I think it's the idea that if somebody did a negative criticism of your or critique of your writing, that then it would put somebody off.

You want people to go into it with their own kind of, you know, with their eyes and ears open.

And it does.

Have you written anything directly in response?

No, I haven't.

Have you not?

Of course I have.

But never put it in there.

So where did this go that you have in you now when you weren't a writer for a living?

Were you the person who was wise all the time?

Were you the person that people sought counsel from?

And writing was certainly the thing that helped you shift that mental state.

you perform so beautifully you know all the films i've seen of you at festivals and things and so actually i understand a bit more about why you're so good at that if you were singing your songs to people but that you that kind of performance wasn't something that came as an alien concept to you do you enjoy the performances

So instead you would say to yourself, this is going to go really well.

This is my happy place being on this stage.
