It really depends on the adaptation. With something like The Last of Us, I've said this a couple of times, The Last of Us is a brilliant adaptation, but they had their story. And obviously they have made changes, in some cases significant changes. But it's... pretty much following the story of the games. In some cases, shot for shot, right? And that's a completely valid way to do it.

a bit more open world, a bit more open-ended, and he isn't necessarily as linearly story-focused as something like Last of Us, you have a bit more latitude to say, well, this is the world, this is the sandbox. What stories do we want to tell? What threads from the games do we want to pull on? But we're not necessarily... obliged to tell one particular story.
