To be a father means to stand between your family and the storm and let the storm believe for at least one more night, this house is unbreakable.

To be a father means to take the blow that was meant for them and then not mention it at dinner time.

The father is somebody who tests the ice before anyone he loves ever steps foot on it.

And you know, the strange holy thing about it is, I guess the thing that young men don't understand is that he does almost all of it in private.

There's no audience for the 2 a.m.

floor walking with a fevered baby dad.

No one films the father who sits in the truck in the driveway for 10 minutes, swallowing a hard day, just collecting himself so he can walk through that door as the man they need him to be instead of the man he feels like.

The best fathering in the world

The best fathering the world has ever seen happens when nobody is watching.

And that's not a tragedy.

That's the design.

Dads are the load-bearing wall inside of the house.

You don't decorate it.

You don't admire it.

You don't even know.

Is that a load-bearing?

You don't even know.

You only notice it the day it's gone, and then you understand it was holding everything up.

I want to say to my children, not for my sake, for somebody, I want them to know, this is what you're looking for.

You know, even when you're fighting it, you don't actually want your father who lets you win.
