But you've got the canoe paddle.
I do.
And leave it on the table.
Oh, this old thing?
Yes.
Time Magazine then was, it had like 800 employees.
We had our own building on 6th Avenue over here.
Yes, it was.
It had a circulation of just under 5 million, and it was surrounded by incredibly talented people, including my eventual partner at Spy Magazine, my eventual partner at Airmail, something I did after Vanity Fair.
It was an incredible group of people.
and we basically have all stayed in touch over the past 50 years.

I felt a bit like a fish out of water, and I tried not to have a Canadian accent.
I just wanted to sound...
like everybody else there.
I tried to dress like everybody else there, but with, like, some... I had an old blazer that my father had given me, and it had a sailing crest on it, but it was really thick.
It was like one of those old wool-melted blazers that you need in Canada because it's so cold.
And it had the crest on it, and at a meeting once, somebody asked me if I was working as a doorman at one of the buildings here.
So I went back with a razor blade and sewed the crest off
that night and but it left a light it was darker where the crest had been than where the jacket was so i looked even more foolish when i went into work the next day but i know i fit in pretty well i mean canada the thing is if you live in canada you're sort of got your nose pressed up two glasses one to britain and one to the united states you're sort of you're aware of both senses of humors and both cultures um
