You're Dead to Me
Geoffrey Chaucer: the medieval father of English literature

Maybe you saw the BBC's 2003 adaptation, which transferred the famous Canterbury Tales to a 21st century setting. And if you're a noughties kid like me, you will remember Paul Bettany's turn as Geoffrey Chaucer in the brilliant movie A Knight's Tale, that all medieval historians love. But what about the life behind the literature? What did Chaucer get up to when he wasn't scribbling his poems? And where do snazzy leggings fit into our story? Let's find out. Are you excited about the leggings? I'm excited about the leggings.

Are you hustling us? Are you pretending to not know anything and then suddenly rolling out knowledge? Marian, I think Mike got it first time, son of a merchant. Yeah, brilliant. Merchant, is it? Okay. Yeah, so a wine merchant. So his father was a vintner, that's what we call them. That's what we call them in Devon as well. Well, we do when we're trying to be a little bit classy and a bit pretentious.

Where's the wine coming from, primarily? France. Okay, so the French are still good at wine, even in the 14th century. Yeah, they've always been good at wine. My mum will be pleased to hear that. Gascon wine. But then one very big thing happened. Do you know the very big thing that happened to little Jeff when he was five years old? Think mid-14th century big things. A plague upon the Vintners? Not just the Vintners, I'm afraid. Yes, the great plague of all plagues, the Black Death.

HÀn tikkasi myös toisen suurta tapahtumaa 14-luvun ajan. HÀn elÀi Black Deathin. HÀn meni sitten toiseen. TiedÀtkö, mikÀ tÀmÀ olisi, Mike? Suurta 14-luvun ajan extravaganzaa. Mega-tapahtuma. Kymmenen vuotta maailmaa. KyllÀ, hyvin tehty. Oliko hÀn sotilas? Sotilas on ehkÀ terveellinen sana. Minulla tuntuu, ettÀ hÀn on vain...

Joten 16 euroa saa Geoffrey Chaucerin takaisin. Kuka antaa tÀmÀn rauhan? Onko se isÀ? IsÀ, kyllÀ. Eli ei edes Lizzie de Boer. HÀn ei saa tÀmÀn rauhan. Onko Geoffrey Chaucer saanut takaisin tÀmÀn rauhan? Se olisi melko traumatisoivaa. Luulen, ettÀ hÀn oli hyvÀ.

You're Dead to Me

Okei, niin Filippa Chaucer, kuten hÀn tulee tietoinen tÀllÀ hetkellÀ, on kunnianjohtaja. KyllÀ, todennÀköisesti. Joten meillÀ on heidÀt nyt molemmat roolissa. On melko hyvÀ, ettÀ he jÀrjestÀvÀt samanlaista... Sinun tÀytyy varmistaa, ettÀ he ovat rajoittaneet, todennÀköisesti. Okei, totta kai. Onko se...

That's a lot of wine. That's a lot to get, isn't it? As you say, it's probably for his household, right? Yeah, it's probably for his household. And so he's an international diplomat. This Jeffrey Chaucer diplomat, man overseas. He's in Italy, he's in France, he's been to Spain, Navarre. He's picking up languages, or he knows languages? Yes.

You're Dead to Me

So he had a staggering number of jobs. We've already heard several already. But I've got a mini quiz for you. Which of these was not a position that Geoffrey Chaucer held during his service? So here we go. Inspector of walls and ditches. Deputy forester. Clerk of the King's Works overseeing the renovations of the Tower of London.

Okei. HÀn nÀyttÀÀ olevan todella tÀrkeÀ. HÀn on melko voimakas. Ja paljon ihmisiÀ tuntuu, ettÀ hÀn on vahvistunut Ditchin gigiin.

You're Dead to Me

Maybe early doors. But I can see him putting his foot down at the old forestry thing. It doesn't seem like a forest is going to be his milieu. Okay. So you're saying Deputy Forester is one we've made up? Yeah. I'm afraid MP for Suffolk was wrong. Because he was actually MP for Kent. Was he really? So he did all six of those jobs in terms of being an MP, but he was representing Kent, not Suffolk. So he was in charge of the wall custom, Deputy Forester. He did inspect those walls and ditches. He renovated the Tower of London. He negotiated the marriage of the King of England.

Onko sinÀ koskaan kuullut Johna Gauntta, Mike? En usko, ettÀ olen kuullut. HÀn on yksi sellaisista isoja nimeÀ edellisestÀ historiasta, jolloin kukaan ei tiedÀ, kuka hÀn on, mutta he tietÀvÀt, ettÀ hÀn on kaunis. Kuka on Johna Gauntta ja miksi hÀn on tÀrkeÀ Chaucerille?

SinÀ sanoit, ettÀ Jumalan kirja on Chaucen ensimmÀinen poeta.

HÀn sopii 100-luvun sotilasta, ja sitten hÀn on luultavasti toisella puolella, kun Pesantin revoltaatio tapahtuu. HÀn on melkein Forrest Gump.

You're Dead to Me

Oho, joku on tukkanut leikkiÀ. Toivottavasti se oli se. Marianne, meidÀn tÀytyy kirjoittaa meidÀn medieval episode of Law and Order. TÀmÀ on aika mielenkiintoista. Jotain vuosia sitten Geoffrey Chaucer oli aika kontroversiaalinen, koska tÀmÀn tapauksen takia. Nyt voimme poistaa toksikin kancellaamisen, koska hÀn on innoissaan.

The statutes of labourers had brought in a lot more legislation to make it harder for people to leave their employers for higher wages. Of course, and Geoffrey was offering higher wages. Yes, exactly. There we go. We can uncancel Geoffrey Chaucer, that's good. And there you go, proof that being a historian is a very exciting job.

You're Dead to Me

SiellÀ on paljon. Hienoa. MielestÀni on aika mennÀ seuraavaan hÀnen suomalaisesta pohjaltaan. On aika mennÀ Canterbury Talesiin. Mike, ennen kuin jatketaan, voisitko esittÀÀ Canterbury Talesi meille?

You're Dead to Me

You presumably have done a lot of traveling to gigs in cars with other comedians. Does this feel very familiar? Oh, completely. I mean, I do a podcast with Henry Packham. I can't get a word in. He's a mighty storyteller. It's brilliant literature, and it's also varied. As you say, it's funny. Some of the stories are kind of beautiful. Some of them are quite sort of moving. But there is that rudeness, that raucousness. There are fart jokes. There are naughty, you know, there's...

You're Dead to Me

Something for everyone. But I think what's very important now is that we hear some middle English. Chaucer is writing in English, but it's not the English that we are using today. And I think the best person to do this would be, of course, a classically trained actor, such as yourself, Mike. I don't know why you're laughing. I think of you as a consummate professional. Mike, would you like to turn over the page in front of you and read us some middle English, please? Oh, wow. Okay, I'm just going to go into it. Fine. Okay, wish me luck.

You're Dead to Me

Oh, I enjoyed that very much. That was really good. What was the accent you went for there? It was sort of, it went a bit sort of offensive Danish, I think, in the end. Yeah, there was a slight Scandinavian feeling to it, but I thought it was quite good. It was really good.

You're Dead to Me
