I imagine, years ago, he promised himself that he would hang up his boots at 60.

I later got to know the family a bit better.
And as you know, I'm now a friend of Robin Wilson, one of his sons.
And what I speculated there was partly true.
He had decided in his head that 60 was the time he wanted to step down.
But also he was concerned that his mental powers were no longer as acute as they had been.
And over time, he developed dementia.
