She would go grocery shopping.
She would keep the house going and everything was fine.
And then they elected the first black mayor in Gary, Indiana.
And the very next day, really not a week later, they had their election on a Tuesday.
And I was going to Edison High School at the time.
And the very next day, all hell broke loose.
I'm like, what?
The black people were fighting on the school bus.
They were fighting in the hallway.
They were attacking white people.
They were fighting with them.
And the white people left, right?
The place turned into a ghetto overnight.
And I was a witness to that.
And I had a white friend because I was afraid of the blacks.
I wasn't accustomed to violence.
You were scared of the blacks too?
I was scared of the blacks.
Because I didn't grow up around violent black people, so I didn't know yet.
I didn't understand.
