It is so touching how much they loved each other.
And it ends so awfully in some ways.
In some ways, not.
There is actually something nice that does happen in there that actually kind of redeems both characters.
But what I loved about it is, I mean, I don't know if it's, I mean, Molly Ringwald's translation is excellent.
It really retains that kind of really sharp, simplified French writing style.
It is spare, you know, and there's nothing in there that doesn't need to be in there.
She's retained that first person present tense, which is my favourite type of writing to write, but also to read.
And I don't know if she had an impact or a say in the title, but I thought the title was interesting.
So obviously Lie With Me, as an English title, there's two readings of that.
So telling lies and also lying together as a romantic couple.
But the French title was ArrΓͺte avec tes mensonges, which is like stop with your lies.
And I said, yeah, this is why it was great.
I studied French and I was like, this is amazing.
But it was, that gave it a different element.
So the original title was Stop With Your Lies, which has almost like an admonishment to it.
And it was probably from Philippe to Thomas saying, stop lying to yourself and you know, be with me essentially.
And this one makes it, it kind of twists it more to maybe a romantic tender kind of, or it sets it up that it's going to be more romantic and tender, I think.
Yeah, I mean, there's such a class thing with that as well because Philippe is kind of more middle class and he's educated and he has that sense that he's going to go somewhere, that he's going to break out of this small town and achieve something, which he does do.
Thomas is a farm boy.
