Dr. Grayson's extensive research includes the development of the Grayson NDE scale, a tool that allows scientists to study these experiences in a systematic way. His book, After, A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond, is a culmination of his insight into how NDEs change conventional views of death and consciousness.
With over four decades dedicated to exploring and understanding these profound experiences, his work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of consciousness and what might lie beyond. For these reasons, I was very excited to speak to him. And of course, I had so many questions. I think you're all going to really enjoy listening to this one.

This was not your original career plan, right? No, not at all. I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but was there sort of a light bulb moment when you discovered or encountered this in the field and decided to take it seriously? Because I imagine people weren't taking it seriously back then.

Just so we have a sense of the scale, how many NDE cases do you think that you have personally worked on or heard, studied?

That's so fascinating. I mean, even โ I have to imagine for you, you encountered this, but do you ever think about โ An alternate version where you maybe just told yourself you were having a weird day and just forgot about it and never pursued this? I imagine that must happen to a lot of people.

Early on when you were researching this stuff, Um, in your book, you mentioned a lot of theories with like oxygen, uh, medication, you know, maybe these are just hallucinations, all sorts of things like that. And you looked into them. What, what were those things? And, uh, what were your initial theories and how did you, uh, end up eliminating those as possibilities for cause?
