by, well, we still don't know who murdered her.
Most people believe Sid Vicious did it.
Others believe it was a drug dealer, a fixture on the downtown scene whose name shall go unmentioned here in this podcast because, well, he's still out there.
In any event, Nancy Spungen's death in room 100 at the Chelsea Hotel on West 23rd Street in October of 1978 is a mythic New York rock and roll event.
Now, Nancy wasn't that influential.
She was cool, I guess, but she wasn't in a band and she wasn't influential in the way that Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth was influential, is influential, or in the way that her Sex Pistols boyfriend Sid Vicious was influential.

Now, if you walk outside the Chelsea and you continue on to this New York Sonic Youth cool thing walking tour that we're about to embark upon and you head over to 8th

And I believe he died from a hot shot given to him from his mother in a mercy kill.

And that happened, like I said, a few months later in February of 1979.
Now, Sid's death took place

So a couple of years before Sid Vicious died at Bank Street, John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived there.
1973 to 1975 this is the era when the fbi was tapping their phone and everyone remembers john and yoko living in the posh dakota building uptown but before they fully settled into the bourgeois lifestyle that so angered and triggered john's assassin mark david chapman john and yoko slummed it in a two-room one-bedroom apartment on bank street
That's where John entertained Black Panthers and IRA gunrunners.
