Hey, I want to get to a couple other things because I talked in the pregame about the Battle of the Boards.
This is the two best rebounding teams in the ACC, probably two of the five to ten best rebounding teams in the country, both teams that get a lot of offensive rebounds.
And I said if either one of these teams was able to dominate the boards, get to a double-digit rebounding margin โ
that it was going to be very very difficult for the other team to win because it takes you know you're used to getting the boards and when you aren't doing that it just causes everything to kind of adjust for you wait a second we're not doing the thing that we usually do and lo and behold
Duke won the battle of the boards and won it fairly convincingly.
In the end, the final margin was 8-37-29, but I looked, and during the game, there were plenty of stretches where Duke had a double-digit rebounding margin on the outstanding Virginia rebounding team.
Virginia is an offensive rebounding juggernaut.
They grabbed nearly 40% of their missed shots on the season.
They grabbed 23% of their missed shots against Duke.
Duke won points in the paint by 10, 26 to 16.
Now, 26 is less points in the paint than we usually get, but the problem was we got fouled so much in the lane that it didn't count as points in the paint.
Those don't count as points in the paint.
In the first half, Cameron Boozer
got fouled and shot 12 free throws, scored 11 points, zero points in the paint for Cameron Boozer.
That's kind of a weird โ I think they need to figure out a way to adjust that stat a little bit to accommodate for guys who get fouled underneath the basket because, frankly, that's a point in the paint, but it doesn't count that way.
So anyway, I just thought it was really impressive that Duke won the battle of the inside as much as we did, and I wanted to shout out Patrick Gungba, who I thought โ
Kind of quietly had a really, really great game.
We didn't feed him.
I didn't feel like we were feeding Pat inside as much as we usually do because, as we talked about, Virginia has two really, really great shot blockers that he was playing against in there.
But he still managed to... He still got 11 points on very, very efficient shooting.
