I mean, look at one of the most famous attempts to cover up in the world, the Watergate scandal. That failed in three weeks. Because people... The key to a cover-up is remember this golden rule when it comes to a cover-up.

The more people you have in on the cover-up, A, the less likely the cover-up is to be true, or B, less likely the cover-up is going to stay a cover-up indefinitely because people can't help it. They talk. I mean, put yourself in a room full of five people and tell them a shocking secret. I guarantee you one of them goes home and after a night of passion with his wife, tells him what she did.
