A minor highway scratch on Interstate 805 in San Diego, California transformed into a fatal nightmare when a cold-blooded driver allegedly used his vehicle as a 5,000-pound weapon
to murder a dedicated father of three in front of his traumatized young daughters.
Family friend Peggy Mock spoke to 10 News.
Barrick Lowe, a 48-year-old regulatory attorney for Illumina, was killed after stopping to exchange insurance information near the State Route 52 interchange.
Lowe had just picked up his daughters, ages seven and nine, from fencing class and was traveling to meet his wife and five-year-old son for dinner when a Nissan Pathfinder clipped his car.
The routine roadside encounter turned into a gruesome execution,
when the other driver refused to get out of his car.
According to officials, Lowe approached the suspect's window to fulfill his legal obligation not only as a citizen, but also an officer of the court.
When the driver tried to flee the scene, Lowe reportedly stood in front of the SUV with his hands on the hood to prevent a hit-and-run.
Instead of stopping, the assailant allegedly floored the accelerator, striking low with such bone-crushing force that his head hit the edge of the pavement, inflicting unsurvivable injuries while his daughters watched through the windshield.
Lowe was taken to a local hospital and died two days later due to the extensive trauma.
The suspect, 57-year-old Lawrence Wynn, was apprehended days later after witnesses provided crucial tips that led investigators to his damaged car.
when a previously convicted felon whose criminal history stretches back over 30 years was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and hit and run resulting in death.
Prosecutors revealed that due to his prior serious felony conviction,
Wynn could face up to 25 years to life under California's free strikes law.
He remains in custody without bond.
