Let me just hop in here for a second. This needs to be said. The degree of difficulty of walking up to someone who you know doesn't want to talk to you and you approach them and not only get them to talk as opposed to just clamming up or running away or... but then tell you things that become helpful in understanding the scope of the story. The biggest impediment in a situation like that is most of the time when you interview someone you've never met before about something sensitive, you want to establish a sense of trust.
