The Changelog: Software Development, Open Source
The best, worst codebase (Interview)

It was amazing. Nice little play on words there. Yeah, I recently wrote a blog post talking about my first job in programming, and it's the best, worst code base I ever worked in. And so, yeah, it was a really fun post and kind of blew up. I mean, you know, way more than any blog post I've written. Got like primogen on YouTube, like doing a video on it. It was really cool. Really neat to see.

Yeah, it's a big credit card processing company that's now been merged or bought out or something. But, you know, pretty, pretty big company. This was like a small branch of it that was like the customer support center. But, you know, fairly in the grand scheme of things, a medium sized company, but fairly large, you know, for actual software development.

Yeah, it was honestly pretty crazy. Going from the only code I had ever seen was code I wrote myself to diving into this kind of code base where we got hundreds of thousands of lines of C Sharp and VB with just crazy database configurations, all this wild stuff going on. And just realizing like, oh, this is what real world code looks like. And of course, I had no other point of comparison.

I now realize... It was a little unique, a little bit of craziness there. But yeah, it was one of those things where you think if you're a successful company, the code's got to be good. And I found out that that's not really the case.
