When you think about the core of this group that came down the pike for me, I had Jeter and Bernie Williams and Paul O'Neill, and of course Tino came over the same year I did, and then you had Pettit and David Cohn and Mariano Rivera.
That's a pretty good core group.
As I say, I was lucky, and these guys were very serious about what they did, and they never admired what they had just accomplished.
It was a great scenario for me.
No.
No, I think I got George on the back nine.
I mean, I really do.
He had Billy.
I think he and Billy were very contentious with each other.
You know, I think the one thing Billy never recognized was that George was the boss.
I recognized George was the boss, and he was allowed to do what he did.
But he never โ in fact, I called him more than he called me.
I don't know if it was disarming him in any way.
But, you know, I used to call him when we were struggling.
I said, George, what am I doing wrong?
You know, and sort of caught him off guard a time or two.
But he never, I mean, he made suggestions to me when we were sitting in a room and stuff like that, but he never called me during a game.
You mean someone else who was famous, impressed by me?
I'll tell you, there were a few of them.
The one that struck me was Henry Kissinger.
