Just gone.
We hadn't heard a sound.
That night, we did everything we could.
Locked every door.
Propped chairs into handles.
Pulled furniture in front of the windows.
It didn't matter.
At 2.4 exactly, the screen door creaked.
And then came the knock.
Three of them.
But this time, it was in the front door.
We didn't answer.
Didn't move.
I could hear Mason breathing shallow next to me, both of us pretending not to exist.
It never opened.
The knocks never repeated.
We just waited until sunrise.
Mason's dad pulled up around 8 the next morning.
We were already packed, standing on the porch like kids waiting for the school bus.
He asked if we were okay.
