I was still staring at it when I heard something behind us.
A crunch.
Just one step.
Loud, deliberate, like a heavy bee pressing down on frozen leaves.
I spun around, flashlight jerking wildly across the trees.
Nothing.
Just branches and shadows.
My heart gave a hard thud.
Rob straightened up.
We're going in, he said.
Already stepping past the broken fence.
I hesitated, then followed.
The wood swallowed us pretty quickly.
No trail, just uneven ground and tangle brush.
We didn't speak.
Rob led, moving slow but steady, flashlight scanning from side to side.
I kept glancing over my shoulder, not because I saw anything, just couldn't shake the feeling that we weren't alone.
It got quieter the farther we went.
I've been in forests plenty of times, but this was different.
No wind through the trees.
