Eventually, I grabbed the box and stepped out.
The air was colder up here, heavier.
Porch steps creaked and gave slightly under my weight, one of them dipping like it was nailed down right.
I knocked on the door.
Light at first, then louder.
Nothing.
That's when I noticed the door wasn't fully closed.
Just hanging there, open maybe an inch or two.
I should have set the box down and walked away.
That would have been the smart thing to do.
But instead, I leaned in and gave the door a nudge.
Hey, I called, not stepping inside.
