Like it was giving me time.
I stayed absolutely still.
My chest barely moved with each breath, and I kept my eyes shut tight even though I wasn't asleep.
I counted in my head.
Counted past a hundred before I drifted off.
I dreamed again.
This time, I saw a mantle, bony, barefoot.
Skin like bark, rough and splitting in places.
He had no eyes.
Just smooth, grey skin where they should have been.
He stood inches from me, close enough to feel something radiating off him.
Not heat.
Something else.
He leaned down and moved his mouth like he was whispering.
But I didn't hear words.
I just felt hollow.
The next morning, the door was open.
The frost had crept halfway into the house.
Alma said nothing.
