It was small stuff, but noticeable.
My thermos, which I always left on the table by the stove, was gone.
Just gone.
The cot had been shifted slightly a couple of inches at most, but I knew exactly how I left it.
I told myself maybe a raccoon got in, but the latch in the door was still hooked.
Nothing else was disturbed.
My pack was untouched.
The food I'd left in the cooler was still there.
Just the thermos missing and the cot a little out of place.
I didn't say anything to Mark.
What was I going to tell him?
That my coffee thermos ghosted me.
I just started latching the door tighter and wedging a piece of fire behind it at night.
Made me feel a little better, even if it probably wouldn't do much.
That night, I heard it again.
The pacing.
A little after three this time.
But then it stopped.
And I heard three knocks, soft, deliberate, against the far wall of the trailer, near where the propane tank sat outside.
Then nothing.
